About the Opportunity
A fast-growing global technology-driven insurance organisation is looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to support its expanding operations in Australia.
This is a broad commercial legal role combining regulatory advisory, commercial contracting, governance, and strategic business partnering. Working closely with regional and global stakeholders, you will support business growth while ensuring compliance with Australian financial services and insurance regulations.
This opportunity is ideal for lawyers looking to move beyond traditional legal advisory into a commercially focused in-house role with regional exposure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice on Australian insurance, financial services, and regulatory matters.
- Advise on ASIC, APRA, AFSL, and related regulatory requirements.
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, including distribution agreements, NDAs, and strategic contracts.
- Support market expansion initiatives across Australia and New Zealand.
- Advise on product structures, distribution models, and customer outcome considerations.
- Monitor regulatory developments and implement legal and compliance changes.
- Maintain corporate governance documentation and legal records.
- Partner with regulators, external counsel, and internal stakeholders on legal and regulatory matters.
- Support compliance governance, AFSL obligations, and regulatory reporting.
- Contribute to regional legal and compliance initiatives supporting business growth.
Key Requirements
- Law degree and admission to practise in Australia.
- Minimum 5 - 8 years of post-qualification experience gained within a leading law firm and/or in-house legal team.
- Strong experience advising on Australian insurance, financial services, or regulatory matters.
- Practical experience supporting AFSL licence obligations and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent commercial contract drafting and negotiation skills.
- Experience working with ASIC, APRA, or other financial services regulators would be advantageous.
- Exposure to insurance, insurtech, technology, or financial services industries is highly preferred.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and commercial judgement.
- Able to thrive within a dynamic, international business environment.
